Cheers to New Year's Resolutions for Your Home

“This year, I’m making some big changes!” Ah, new year. A season of reflection. A season of looking ahead. We all do it; we promise ourselves that this year will be different as we make a list of self-improvements. Let’s make 2018 be the year we actually check these things off. But, let’s not stop with ourselves, let’s work on our homes as well. So, between the champagne and the black eyed peas, let’s look at the top five New Year’s resolutions for your home.

 1.  De-Clutter (organize your home’s stuff)
According to a recent survey, eighty-four percent of recently stressed Americans say they worry that their home isn’t clean or organized enough, and within that group, 55 percent called it out as a source of recent stress. A clean home is a happy and (less stressful) home. Check out these creative ways to gain extra storage.
 2.  Watch Your Drinking (use less water)
Have you ever seen stats on how much water we use each day? It’s nuts! The average person uses 80-100 gallons of water. Every. Single. Day. From baths and showers to watering our yards, we use a ton of water. But there are also tons of ways to reduce our use. Replace your old shower heads and toilets with low-flow models.
 3.  Relax More (cut down on energy use)
Going green is a trendy resolution for sure. Everyone is trying to hop on the organic lifestyle train. This line of thinking can easily transfer to your home. And, the best part is...it can help your wallet too.

 •  Schedule yearly HVAC maintenance
 •  Turn off your lights when you leave the room
 •  Switch to LED lightbulbs Change your filters regularly
 •  Seal and insulate your ducts
 •  Seal your doors and windows
 4.  Budget Better (plan your yearly finances for your house)
There are two ways to look at yearly home maintenance. There's the 1% rule where you plan for 1% of your home's sale price will be used for home improvements. There's also the square foot rule where you budget $1 for every square foot. Whether it's standard upkeep or a project you've always wanted to tackle, it's necessary to plan for annual improvements.
 5.  Cultivate Friendships (become the house where everyone wants to hang out)
Perhaps you’ve made it a resolution to stay in touch with friends better this year. Why not take it one step further and invite them over? This year, add a few things to your house to ensure that everyone wants to be there when it comes to parties and get-togethers. Do you have a comfortable spot to watch the big game? How about a backyard with enough seating for that 4th of July cookout? A few simple additions can make your home the place to be this year!
