Nestled between Amite and Tickfaw, just off of Highway 55, is the lovely community of Independence.
If you’re looking to call this place home, you’ll never feel confined by fences or zero lot lines. Here, there are A-framed wooden houses with sprawling front porches, brick single-family homes and larger customized homes on open, spacious lots.
Independence is a small rural town, but it throws a party like a metropolitan giant. This community prides itself on hosting year-long civic and holiday events that draw residents and locals from surrounding towns including the annual Christmas Parade, the Easter Eggstravaganza and the July 4th Celebration. Perhaps the most famous however in this town that’s dubbed itself “Little Italy” is the annual Sicilian Heritage Festival which pays homage to its Italian immigrant founders.
There are some great “mom and pop” restaurants and shops that line the main thoroughfare of Independence. One such place is the Barb-B-Que Station - a converted old-time gas station and the place to go for specialty barbeque dishes and sandwiches. Their signature Brisket Burger will keep you coming back for more!
This is the kind of small town charm you’ll come to love in Independence!
